SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Anti-Flag.

Anti-Flag is not some new young angry group, nay, they have been around since the 80s!

Their most recent album, The People Or The Gun, just came out on June 9th so pick it up if you like it! And let them know you heard about them here.

anti-flag1

The first song we reviewed was “The Economy is Suffering… Let It Die”. Geoff absolutely loved it and wanted to listen to it driving down the road at 100 mph. I tried to get into the history of the band and Geoff just wanted to go get some Krystal burgers and tongue kiss (while listening to Anti-Flag!).

The second song we reviewed was “No War Without Warriors (How Do You Sleep?)” and for me, this one was more about the music than the lyrics for me. I found myself bouncing and really enjoying it. Geoff also loved it and again talked about driving fast!

The third song was “Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington D.C. (Sheep In Shepherd’s Clothing)”. This got us into a tangent on long song and album titles. Then we talked about cheeseburgers and food and got hungry. But believe me we enjoyed this song and this album from what we heard!

Let us know what you think!

Join us live on Wednesdays from 8-9 PM Eastern and join in the discussion!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by The Leftovers.

The Leftovers describe themselves as punk and pop. We’ll see what their album, Eager to Please is like!

the-leftovers

The first song we listened to was “I Want You Back”. I thought it had clear lyrics, a little poppy for me but still good. The music behind it was a little more punky which I did like. I guess they did hit punk and pop there. Geoff agreed re the lyrics and also felt that he has felt the pain of wanting someone back (mainly, me!).

The second song was “Telephone Operator” and it made me like them even more! Geoff thought it was repetitive. They were compared by our live chatroom to Elvis Costello who the band did credit as an influence. So we have split on this so far. Let’s see what the last song brings.

The last song was “You Know What You Do” and this was pretty much everyone’s favorite so far. We were all in a good mood after hearing this song so this episode ended on a high note!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Dante, Gene and the Future Starlets.

Per the website it is Gene Dante and the Future Starlets. I guess they were doing the proper last name first on the info sheet. Their newest album is The Romantic Lead.

gene-dante

The first song we reviewed was “To a God Unknown” and apologies for the loud typing by one of us over the intro to the song. I guess the live chatroom had some important things to say! I found myself wandering during the song. I enjoyed it as background music. Geoff really enjoyed it and found the music and lyics and vocals all very pleasant.

The second song we reviewed was “Photosynthetic”. This lead singer has a great voice but did this talking thing during this song that I don’t like. Geoff said Elvis did it but I am not a huge Elvis fan. I like the songs he sang but his singing is not my thing. Geoff entertained us with much singing!

Our last song was “Purity of Intent”. I really liked this song. Geoff didn’t. He thought it was an enunciated Bob Dylan. This one had talking, too but it was at the beginning and I was fine with that. This is definitely an album that I would like to hear more of so in rotation it goes! What did you think?

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by The Proclaimers.

Geoff started out saying he didn’t have much hope as we’ve had less than good luck with bands from the 80s and 90s who come out with new albums but, as always, I have hope.

The Proclaimers’ new album is available in the US on August 31st. We only received 4 songs and will review 3 so maybe talk with the folks in the UK and Canada (where they can buy it now) on how the whole album is.

Layout 1

As you can see, I was wrong on the title of the album. But the first song we did WAS “17″, a cover of The Kings of Leon. The chatroom was less than stellar on this song. Many felt it was great bar music to drink to. Geoff hated the harmonica. Geoff said I am too forgiving on music but I found it pleasing to listen to.

The second song was “The Long Haul”. Geoff was not happy with this one either. I felt the same as the last one where I’d love to hear it in a pub in the background. Maybe we’ll have better luck with song number 3?

So the third song, “S-O-R-R-Y” Geoff wanted to turn it off after the first few seconds. I decided to fast forward through it some (hence the jumpiness and shortness). It was Geoff’s least favorite. I wasn’t too pleased either. There was one more song but we chose not to listen to it. Who knows, maybe the CD won’t be as bad!

We’re looking for someone to help us with some local strategy talk so if you’re in the Orlando area and want to help us get our plans off the ground please email us at comasow@gmail.com and thanks!

We do have new SomaCow t-shirts. You can see them (and buy them) here! They are limited edition for the new studio we’re building.

We’re working on the ComaSow shirts, you can put your input in here re slogan and look.

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Vans Warped Tour 2009.

We started out this episode discussing the May SomaCow Leaderboard possible winners. The last thing we saw was Glenn Webber and Soundguy fighting for first but we’ll have to wait until SomaCow’s live Friday show to find out! You can find out more about the leaderboard here on our forum!

We usually do 30 minute episodes with three-four songs from an album. This album has 50 or so songs so we decided to do one long episode with multiple reviews.

vans-warped-tour

Our first song was pretty safe, Flogging Molly’s “Man With No Country” and of course it was a winner. Let me just say now, for ease of typing out, this album is great and check out the tour schedule to catch Vans Warped Tour 2009 near you! I’ll still list the songs we reviewed as they weren’t all perfect but, well, here it is.

Bad Religion with “New Dark Ages”. We tried to remember what songs we liked or have heard from them in the past. We think we got it but either way this is a band we will be purchasing some music from!

All Time Low with “Weightless”, another great song!

P.O.S. with “Optimist (We Are Not For Them)”, we were all pleasantly surprised in the chatroom with this one. What great basic rap. I mean basic in a good way, it’s not full of crappy rhymes or silly noises, just good rap!

Jeffree Star with “Prisoner”. Geoff made fun of the Jeffree part but in the end, this was another hit!

Streetlight Manifesto with “What A Wicked Gang Are We Below” and long title but another fantastic song.

Breath Carolina with “Classified”. This one got the rip cord and the chatroom agreed. Do you? (my apologies, it’s Breathe Carolina)

Left Alone with “3 Bottles Of Wine” and woo hoo, another winner, back on track.

Finally was Pour Habit with “Institution”. This song was also fabulous! We had such a high note with these last two we decided to stop for the evening but I think we’ll be revisiting this album down the road to check out some more of the bands!

Thank you all for your support whether it be here, downloads, or in the live chatroom. We have fun doing the show and it’s very much because of you!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by The Singhs.

In this, another fine hour, I reviewed The Singhs’ Supersaturated.

the-singhs

Their website didn’t work well on my awesome computer so in case you have the same problem, here’s their myspace page.

“Daddy’s All Gone” was the first song I reviewed. It got me a little teary-eyed. It was a very pretty song and I lost my dad about 6 months ago. Not that it’s necessarily about losing your dad, but some lyrics just reminded me of him. But anyway! It was a very pretty song and I enjoyed it. Chatroom had mixed reactions. The bass line definitely stood out to us. The lead seemed to reach for higher notes which was unnecessary. He had a good voice but when he tried to hit the higher ones they weren’t always in key.

The second song was “The Dance”. The Singhs are definitely growing on me as of this song but again the high notes were just too reachy. The bass again stood out. It’s a kind of odd mix of music that I liked.

The final song was “Invisible”. This was my favorite. I loved this song and it was very not how ComaSow usually goes. Usually we will play a couple good songs and the third one bombs but this time it got better as it went along.

This band was very unique. They were maybe funky instead of the funk they claim. They have more of a jazz sound mixed with so many other genres. Check them out!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Sounds Of The City-Belfast.

This is a CD that I’ve had for a few weeks and really wanted to review. Geoff is out again this week so I took this opportunity! Plus Gavin, from Belfast, was in our live chatroom!

sounds-of-the-city-belfast

The first song we reviewed was “Rebel Get By” by General Fiasco. Wow, we loved it! I don’t think there was one negative or even iffy comment in the live chatroom!

Escape Act’s “Cabin Fever” was our next song and again it was loved by all! There was one scream I didn’t like, it kind of jarred me, but overall it was a great piece.

Our third song was from The Beat Poets, “Staring Stars Down”. They have twitter, too!

We had time for one more song, “Up Down” by Skibunny. This one was probably the least favorite of the four but it had some high standards to reach! In and of itself, it was a very good song.

I have requested music from these bands and am hoping to have more in the near future! If you have a twitter and follow The Beat Poets, follow me and Geoff, too!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Skamper.

Their album, Thunderbeast, is what we reviewed this time.

skamper1

“Sugarhate” was the first song. We were not really impressd. Glenn (in our chatroom) and I said we heard some promise and would give the band a 2nd try but the first song was not music to our ears.

“Number 9″ was the second song. I kind of liked that one but Geoff pulled that rip-cord so we played “Starbird”. This one made it all the way through. As Geoff said, “it was a song” so they get credit.

We gave them one more chance with “Evacuate”. I thought the lead singer sounded like the lead singer of Caroline’s Spine. Geoff got defensive and disagreed saying it was just the effect on the voice.

So yeah, this episode was filled with lots of great debates between Geoff and I and the chatroom said we went overboard but what do you think? In the end we decided that we aren’t big fans of Skamper but maybe you will be? Let us know here or on our forum!

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Sarah Bettens

Although Sarah has a new album out, we are reviewing Shine from last year.

sarah-bettens

Our first song was “I Can’t Get Out”. It got mixed reviews from our chatroom, but Geoff and I liked it!

The second song was “Daddy’s Gun”. It was a little too feminine for Geoff I guess? Many people complained that it was too Lilith Fair and I agree but I don’t think it’s a bad thing!

Our final song was “Put It Out For Good”. Geoff had me stop it and rewind it. He didn’t like the raspy voice. I liked it, reminded me of Amy Ray from the Indigo Girls but that didn’t help Geoff like her voice any more. What’s wrong with the Indigo Girls?

Anyway, I liked it. Geoff was back and forth as was the live chatroom which you can join every Wednesday at 8 PM Eastern!

icon for podpress  ComaSow - Stephen Lynch [43:35m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Stephen Lynch.

We went and saw Stephen Lynch a couple years ago and besides Geoff almost punching Mickey who accidentally felt me up (he thought he was feeling up Geoff), it was the best thing we’ve ever seen! Comedy and great guitar playing and great singing, what can be better?

Stephen Lynch’s new album, 3 Balloons, is available now! If you get it, let him know you heard it here!

stephen-lynch

The first song we chose, “Crazy Peanuts” was not something we were not too fond of, just didn’t seem to be as good as his usual stuff so we rip corded it. Now our live chatroom said we were wrong to rip cord it but we run the show!

Our second song was “Waiting” which is the first song off the album. Now this song is awesome! This is Stephen Lynch totally. The chat room thought maybe the topic was a little outdated but I think in this case, it is not ‘too soon’. Man my laugh is cackly.

We got into KoL talk (Kingdom of Loathing for those of you not yet in the know). If you play and need a clan, come join SomaCow. If you don’t play, it’s brilliant! It is a simple graphic game but the great part of the game comes in all of the references-from They Might Be Giants to a red door painted black, everything is so well written. Check it out and say hi to Geoff (somacow) and myself (mysgyn).

Our third song was “3 Balloons”. Listening back, we didn’t review it. But it also is a very good song. We got off into a discussion of comedy and comedians. Who is your favorite. Do you go see comedians live? It seems the places where comedians can perform are going away, at least around here.

I wanted to play some old Stephen Lynch. I tried playing “Baby” which I think is funny but Geoff didn’t think so and I can’t reach the rip cord from over at my computer so he won. (He used to think that was a funny song…)

Geoff gave us a history lesson on what it means to be ‘blue’ in comedy. Then we went on to play one of our Stephen Lynch favs, “If I Were Gay”. The classics never die.

Stop by our forum when you get a chance. Check out the events section (and the others) for our upcoming Cure for the Run on August 22nd!
